I believe every police department in Rhode Island should have police K9’s. The reason why they should have the K9’s is because they can help out in many different aspects.  These types of K9’s are not like our regular dogs! These police K9 dogs are certified in narcotics detection, patrol work, building searches, area searches, tracking, article recovery, and criminal apprehension. The schooling for the K9’s and handlers lasts 6 months. Also they are trained in handler protection.  For the dogs to know what to do their commands are in given in German/Czech. Some of the police dogs come from Europe. Many of these police K9’s are aggressive dogs compared to the one’s in airports where they are more passive.  The difference between aggressive and passive ones are that the aggressive dogs will scratch and bark when they find what they are looking for, the passive dogs are the ones that sit when they find their source. Some of police dogs have bullet proof vests and on the vests they can attach a camera to it so they can see what's in the building/ room.  Below is a picture of K9 Havoc from the  Burlington MA police, with his bullet proof vest on and a camera attached to it.
The best type of breeds that the police work with are German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, and Labrador Retrievers.

All of the police K9 cars are labeled K9 unit. This way people know to stay away from the car. Usually the K9 cars will have written on them "Caution: K9". Some of the K9 units have "Keep Away"  on the windows.   Also a few K9 handlers have a button on their belts that they use to open the door for dog if the suspect is trying to fight them and they need help in an emergency.
While the dogs are in the car there is a kennel for the dogs in the backseat! The K-9 units are equipped with a temperature controlled system so if the car gets too hot the windows will go down and also an alarm will sound, so the handler knows it's too hot in the car.
