Week 4 RECAP Citizen's Police Class

On Wednesday during the West Warwick Citizen's Police class we learned about 2 tools that the police officers use. The 2 tools we learned about were OC spray (Pepper spray) and the second was the taser.  Police officers use the pepper spray when subjects are being combative with them or they will use it for large crowds. After it is sprayed the feeling is like eating a hot pepper your eyes start to water and they feel like they are on fire! They also taught us the proper way to spray the paper spray and they showed us a video about pepper spray. Here is the video they showed us on how to pepper spray the proper way https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsBeUl7UmxU. The last part of the class was the when we learned  about the Taser. The taser is used by someone getting zapped. The reason why they use the taser is because it helps to control people when they are not following directions.

A few weeks back I came across a post that The Warwick Police had on their FaceBook page about the wonderful K9 program they have that been in place since 2012. Just wanted to thank the team for their hard work! Here is some material the post  mentioned  some of  K-9 Viking and K-9 Fox success so far they have 497 narcotic searches, 53 building searches, 97 human tracks, and 72 demonstrations.   Since the K-9’s have been in place they have had 10 apprehensions and only 3 required a “bite”.   According to the Warwick Police that is a 70% non- injury rate. Awesome Job  K-9 Viking and K-9 Fox have been responsible for seizing more than 150 pounds of marijuana, 34 pounds of heroin, 36 pounds of cocaine, meth, ecstasy, molly and over thousands of illegal prescription pills off the streets.   In drug money they recovered $900k dollars. West Warwick Citizen's Police Class Week 3

Hi All, Well week 3 of the 10 week classes is in the books. During the course on Wednesday night we learned about Criminal Law and the elements of criminal law. In Criminal law there are 2 sources of it which are Statutes, and Common Law. In Rhode Island the Common Law definition is when the Rhode Island Statue doesn't define a crime. For example: the elements of a burglary are found in case law. A Statue can replace or codify the common law. Some law areas we went over were crimes against people, property crimes, crimes against society, and Inchoate Crimes.  Inchoate crimes are conspiracy, solicitation, and attempt. At the end of the class we were showing a video of what cases district court handle. They mostly handle civil disputes, and  small business court. Thanks for reading!

FATS Experience

Hi All, Reading the title you might be wondering what FATS stands for? FATS stands for Firearms Training Simulator.  This is a machine that allows police officer to practice shooting their guns/tasers and is on a flat screen. The Firearms Training Simulator has different  scenarios in which officers have to respond to and make  a split -second decision on which weapon they would use in the scene. On Friday morning I got to try the FATS out as part of the West Warwick Citizens Police Class that I'm taking .This let me see the kind of decisions that police officers have to make every day when they respond to incidents. Here's a video I found that shows people using it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkf3XgS6SA4
